— Ashton Stair’s strong finish wasn’t quite enough to lift her to the individual championship in the Badger South girls golf meet Wednesday at Evansville Golf Club.

The Milton High School senior carded a 42 on the front nine, then charged back with a 1-over-par 37 on the back for a 79, which was good for fourth place.

McKenzie Parks of Oregon posted a 4-over 75 for medalist honors. Madison Edgewood won the South team title with a 326, and Milton was second at 341.

Stair said she had trouble with her iron play on the front, but her putter come through on the back nine. She drained a 40-footer for a birdie on No. 16 and closed her round by sinking a 25-footer at 18 for her second birdie.

“We played (the conference meet) at Evansville last year, and it’s been like that for no particular reason,” Stair said of her round. “Last year, I shot 46-37.’’

Despite not getting out of the blocks in good fashion, Stair said she thinks her game is turning around as the Red Hawks head into WIAA Division 1 regional play next week at Grand Geneva in Lake Geneva.

“Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve felt I could play golf,” Stair said. “It started off a little rough, but now I feel comfortable.’’
