Middleton High’s football team stung Verona in the last seven seconds of the first half Friday night and never let up in the Big Eight Conference showdown.

The host Cardinals went on from a 21-10 halftime lead to a 34-16 victory in the battle of unbeaten and state-ranked teams.

Middleton, No. 4 in the Associated Press poll for large schools, improved to 4-0 and moved back into a tie with Sun Prairie for the Big Eight lead. Verona, No. 10 in the poll, slipped to 3-1 and into a third-place tie with Janesville Parker.

Scott Carey’s 45-yard pass to Drew Haack set up Middleton for a key touchdown in the final minute of the first half. That took the Cardinals to the Verona 19.

Carey then threw to Kevin Peternell, who wound up out of bounds at the 5. Haack caught a touchdown pass on the next play to give the Cardinals their 11-point halftime lead and all the momentum for the second half.

Middleton’s Jamie Hofer gained 300 yards on 29 carries, including touchdown runs of 41, 70 and 74 yards. Teammate Ryan McDonald added 120 yards on 16 carries.
