— An elderly Walworth County author and retired museum curator is set for arraignment Wednesday on a possession of child pornography charge.

Walter S. Dunn, 82, of LaFayette Township is charged with possessing pictures of nude girls under 18 who are engaged in sex with adult men.

Dunn is the author of more than a dozen books about World War II, the American frontier and a history of Walworth County. Dunn was a former curator with the State Historical Society Museum in Madison and several other museums throughout the nation, a museum official there said.

When contacted by telephone, Dunn would only say that the case would be resolved next week.

“Give me a break,” he said. “I’m 82 years old.”

Under police questioning, Dunn admitted he was addicted to pornography, but most of his collection of about 2,000 tapes and CDs and 400 VHS tapes were of adult porn, according to the complaint.

Child pornography was found on Dunn’s computer in May by an Elkhorn computer technician who was hired by the author to rid the machine of a virus, according to a criminal complaint.

The technician found multiple images of child erotica while diagnosing the problem with Dunn’s computer, according to the complaint.

The technician then contacted authorities. Elkhorn police and the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office launched a mutual investigation.

The technician found child porn on the computer’s hard drive and on a disc left in the computer’s disc drive, according to a search warrant.

The technician said Dunn had been a customer since 2003, according to the warrant.

Authorities seized the computer from the Elkhorn repair shop and five desktop computers from Dunn’s home, according to the warrant.

Police also took an address book containing passwords, eight CDs containing child porn and a recipe boxes full of cataloged information.

A charge of possession of child pornography was filed last month against Dunn, who faces up to 25 years in prison and a $100,000 fine if found guilty of the felony offense. Dunn is free on a signature bond.

Dunn was to make a court appearance this week, but he requested a change of judge, which set back the arraignment until 1:15 p.m. Wednesday before Walworth County Judge James Carlson.

Some of Dunn’s books include:

“Soviet Blitzkrieg: The Battle for White Russia, 1944”; “Kursk: Hitler's Gamble, 1943”; Hitler's Nemesis: The Red Army, 1930-45”; “People of the American Frontier: The Coming of the American Revolution”; “Walworth County, WI (Images of America)”; and “The Soviet Economy and the Red Army, 1930-1945.”
