Crystal Graff, the 2009 state Player of the Year, and her Madison La Follette teammates were a little too much for visiting Janesville Craig in Big Eight girls volleyball Thursday night.

Craig High (2-2 in the Big Eight) kept things close in Games 1 and 2, losing 25-22 and 25-17. La Follette then clinched the victory with a 25-14 win in Game 3.

“We played great the first two games, especially our back row defense,” Craig High coach Blake Budrow said. “But we missed too many serves the entire match, and against a team like La Follette, you can’t do that.

“They’re unbeaten in our conference, and Graff is a great player, but we battled them.”

Craig will compete in the Edgerton Invitational on Saturday.

n West 3, Parker 1—Parker came close again, but the Vikings didn’t have quite enough to pull a Big Eight win against a strong Madison West team

Parker won the first game, 25-12, but the Regents prevailed with 26-24, 25-23 and 25-16 wins in the final three games.

“It was one of those nights against a very good team where we couldn’t get over the hump, like when we played Middleton,” Parker coach Dave Lehmann said after the Vikings fell to 2-2 in the conference. “It was close, but we just didn’t do enough to get there.”

The Vikings did get 23 digs from Lindsey Hoff and nine from Natalie McDonald. Lehman also praised Parker’s strong hitting, led by Sam Shelton’s 14 kills.

Parker plays Saturday in the Delavan-Darien Invitational, where the Vikings are defending champions.
