Janesville Jets roll in opener

— The Janesville Jets blanked the New Mexico Mustangs, 7-0, here Wednesday to open the four-day NAHL Showcase Tournament.

Ross Mauermann, a Janesville Parker graduate, had a pair of assists on Janesville’s three goals in the first period. Seven different Jets scored.

“It was a good game for the guys,” Janesville coach Dane Litke said. “It’s nice to get a win early at the Showcase. Overall, it was the best we have played.”

The Jets face the Alaska Avalanche at 1:15 p.m. today.

-- Giese joins Jets—The Jets announced Wednesday that they have hired Max Giese as a player scout for the North American Hockey League (NAHL) team.

His focus will be on the Midwest, covering Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Iowa. He will scout and identify players for tender offers, draft picks and tryout camps.

Giese played high school hockey for the Janesville Bluebirds, serving as their starting goaltender from 2004-06, which included the 2005 WIAA state tournament. He played for the Janesville J-Hawks from the age of 5 until his freshman year of high school.

Before joining the Jets, Giese worked for the scouting services Redline Report (2008-10) and McKeen’s Hockey (2006-08). He also is attending UW-Whitewater, with a major in print journalism and a minor in business.
