— Adam Vesterfelt was the first to admit he had plenty of help Friday night.

Janesville Parker’s all-conference tailback led his team with 258 yards on 41 carries, but the junior had help all around him, as the Vikings needed all of their points to hold off Madison East, 41-30, at Lussier Stadium.

“I think our offensive line is getting a lot better,” Vesterfelt said after his two-touchdown performance helped Parker improve to 2-1 in Big Eight Conference football. “They’re giving me a lot more room to run through the holes.”

Along with the line, Parker quarterback Decker Thompson completed five of 11 passes for 99 yards, including a 22-yard pass to Vernon Franklin for the final Parker touchdown.

Fullback Cody Taber added a 1-yard touchdown run to open the second half and added two catches for 28 yards. Aaron Ackerman scored on a counter from 31 yards out.

Parker accumulated 409 yards of offense, with 310 on the ground, but gave up 244 yards passing against East spread attack.

“I’m not going to lie. We didn’t anticipate coming into this game and getting into a shootout,” Parker coach Joe Dye said. “It was more like a track meet at times than a football game.”

But Parker reached the tape first, staying just far enough in front of the winless Purgolders (0-3), who matched the Vikings with 20 second-half points.

Parker jumped out a to 21-3 lead after defensive back Erik Albeck returned a tipped pass 35 yards for a touchdown with 6:54 left in the first half. Vesterfelt then scored from three yards out. Ackerman set up Vesterfelt’s second touchdown with 54-yard reverse to loosen up the East defense.

Coleman Fraser countered for East with 57-yard touchdown reception as the senior slipped behind the Parker defense with :56 remaining in the first half.

That set up the 40-point second half, with each team scoring 20 points.

“It was pretty nerve-wrecking,” Vesterfelt admitted as East closed within 34-24 with 9:11 left in the game. “But I had confidence in our defense.”

It certainly made for a wild second half, as the Vikings needed all the points they could muster.

“I think we are getting better,” Dye said. “But, obviously, giving up 30 points was not how we had things drawn up.”
