Milton High failed to take a knee to run out the final seconds, and the resulting turnover led to a crushing defeat in a nonconference football game Friday night at Mount Horeb.


Danny Elver hit Matt Fargo with his fifth touchdown pass of the game as time expired to give unbeaten Mount Horeb/Barneveld (3-0) a 39-36, come-from-behind victory.


The Red Hawks (1-2) fumbled a pitch with less than a minute left in the game in Mount Horeb/Barneveld territory, with the option of taking a knee and running out the clock.


Mount Horeb/Barneveld recovered, and Elver hit Fargo from 24 yards out on the game’s final play.


The wild game featured 1,008 yards in total offense, including 531 by Milton.


Milton quarterback Nate Hammon accounted for 424 yards of total offense. The senior rushed 21 times for 259 yards and one TD, and he threw for 165 yards and three touchdowns.


Riley Kovars caught eight passes for 67 yards and two Milton touchdowns.


Fargo caught eight passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns, while Sam Nechkash caught two scoring passes for Mount Horeb/Barneveld.

n Oregon 23, Monroe 6—The visiting Panthers (1-2) turned back Monroe’s early threats and went on to their first victory of the season in a Badger South opener.


Josh Brauns’ 20-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Doering with 3:13 left in the first quarter helped Oregon to a 7-0 lead. Monroe (0-3) then drove to the Panthers’ 15- and 17-yard lines on the ensuing possessions, but the Cheesemakers failed to score until Dillon Schwitz’s 59-yard punt return in the fourth quarter.


Meanwhile, Oregon took control with Andy Nagel’s 22-yard field goal, Joe Turner’s 23-yard touchdown reception and Jeff Hurda’s 37-yard interception return.


Oregon’s Jake Gundlach rushed 21 times for 101 yards, nine more than his team’s net total.

Bennett Young broke free for a 50-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to put Edgewood in gear. Crusaders’ quarterback Seth White completed five of 16 passes for 130 yards and one touchdown.
