Wedel, McFarland’s senior quarterback, rushed for 131 yards, passed for 171 yards and a touchdown, scored two touchdowns and kicked two extra points in the leading the undefeated Spartans past the Blue Devils, 20-19, in a thrilling Rock Valley North opener at Evansville.

Wedel, who rushed 20 times, put the crowning touch on his big night with a 39-yard touchdown run that gave defending co-champion McFarland its 20-19 edge with 6:19 left in the game. That completed a 63-yard, six-play drive that produced the winning touchdown just over two minutes after Evansville had grabbed a 19-14 lead.

The Blue Devils (1-2) began an 80-yard, 10-play touchdown drive late in the third quarter. They gained their 19-14 edge on Casey Moseley’s 38-yard scoring pass to Dan Walczak with 8:29 to go in the game.

After the Spartans got the last touchdown, Evansville drove to the McFarland 40 before losing the ball on downs with just over two minutes remaining. The Spartans (3-0), No. 3 in the Associated Press state ratings for medium-sized schools, then ran out the clock.
