— Jim Crawford is one step closer to a second straight Super Senior City Tournament title.

In Thursday’s first round of the 36-hole tournament at Riverside Golf Course, Crawford fired a 3-over par 74 to take a one-shot lead over Dale Bladorn in the Championship Flight of the 60-69 age bracket. Crawford won last year’s rain-shortened event by one stroke.

Rich Schmitz shot an 81 to lead the Championship Flight of the 70-79 age group. Ole Helgestad, who won last year’s 70-79 Championship Flight, fired an 84 and is three shots back. Richard Moore is two shots back after an opening round 83.

Jan Hoffman, a nine-time Janesville city champion, shot an opening-round 81 in the Championship Flight of the 60-69 age group. Hoffman, who last won a city title in 1975, had an up-and-down round with one birdie, seven bogeys and two double-bogeys.

Crawford was Mr. Consistency in his opening round. He had three bogeys and one birdie in his round.

Bladorn was the clubhouse leader with three birdies in his round, but also had two double bogeys.

Round two of the tournament is today at Riverside.
