Beloit College edged in opener

— The University of Chicago Maroons scored with 43 seconds remaining to defeat the host Beloit College Buccaneers, 28-25, in a nonconference football opener for both schools Saturday night at Strong Stadium.

Clay Wolff caught a 6-yard pass from Marshall Oium to complete a four-play, 64-yard drive and caught the two-point conversion pass for the victory margin.

The Bucs scored twice in the first quarter for the lead, including Edgerton native Derek Carrier’s a 48-yard touchdown reception that gave the Bucs a 13-0 lead.

Chicago bounced back with two straight scores in the second quarter to tie it, 13-13. The Bucs retook the lead, 19-13, on Julian Ross’s 6-yard TD reception from Brian Maughn with six seconds remaining in the half.

The Bucs improved their lead to 25-13 on Andrew Christensen’s 50-yard TD reception from Maughn. Chicago cut Beloit’s lead to 25-19 on Francis Adarkwa’s 4-yard run with 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Maughn completed 22 of 41 passes with one interception for 309 yards. Carrier caught seven passes for 113 yards to pace Beloit.
