WCLO's Stan Stricker reports on dangers of illegal yard signs

RSS

Yard signs could be a safety problem in Janesville. Police are urging residents to keep yard and political signs on private property and avoid obstructing the vision of motorists.

Sergeant Brian Donohoue says signs placed in the terrace, or on utility poles, or street signs, or any public right of way, can be a real hazard. Concerns are heightened this time of year because of the start of school, and the presence of children.

Donohoue adds residents might like officers to perform other duties, rather than pick up illegal yard signs.

You can call "Neighborhood Services" all you want, I expect that they will just call the police. I tried getting someone from code enforcement to do something and they claimed it wasnt their job and told me to do just that. There are a few places in town that often put signs on the terrace but the police will usually drive by unless they have a complaint. There has been a rummage sale sign on Milton Ave in the 800 block that has been there for weeks.

If anyone has specific locations of concern, please call city Neighborhood Services and they will investigate the complaint. I agree as a cyclist there are many obstructed corners that are potentially dangerous, but the city's vision triangle ordinance (12.24.030) does exclude controlled intersections (with a light or sign). The terrace, however, should be free of obstructions in all cases.

One of my neighbors had a sign returned to them by a nice officer. It was a yard sale sign. He was decent about it and did not look like it was a fun task for him to do. I do not think it is political signs, it is the garage and yard sale signs nailed and taped up everywhere. As far as blocked views at intersections, as short as it took for a few of you to complain about it here, did you call the public works and mention it to them? Or better yet, you are on the computer, go to the City of Janesville web site and send an email to them, I was just on their site and it is easy as can be. Lets not always make the police do what we as citizens can.

It's all a conspiracy to force people to pay for rummage sale ads in the Gazette rather than put up signs in the medians all over town ;)

Scooter47 - Exactly! What is the difference between a sign and a pole or a tree or a bush? I think they are bored and making stuff up to get after people about.

Just like Janesville to whine about yard signs...why are the dems really that freaked about the election...I agree with the trees and junk...why dont you go and handle that issue..instead whine about signs...this town is really turning to hell quick

There are an abundance of corners in Janesville where the trees and bushes are overgrown and block a drivers vision. I think this should take priority over yard signs, political or not. These corners are just an accident waiting to happen.

Why do the Janesville Police worry about yard signs? There are worse things that have happened in this town, i.e., shootings and drug dealings. They should focus their energy on the real crimes. Also, if they are going to remove those signs, they better remove all of them, not just the ones representing a certain political party. Just sayin'.

What about those stupid "Lost Dog" signs that were put on every single pole for blocks on Center and Racine last spring that are still there in some places?

PER THE ARTICLE: " ... (Sergeant Brian) Donohoue adds residents might like officers to perform other duties, rather than pick up illegal yard signs ..." It sounds like Donohoue's had a bad day.

The media needs to take pictures of lots of those locations and print them in the paper.

Why does somebody always think political issues have to do with everything. Also how does grass block your line of sight?

Oh I've got to: "Won't somebody please think of the children?!" - Helen Lovejoy. I love it when a newspaper article immediately makes a Simpson's reference.

Common sense people. Keep the signs in your yard. I can't believe this has to be an issue every single year.

You want to talk about obstructing vision of motorists, go look at the corner of River St. and Union or go to the corner of Jackson and Kellogg and try to see, you have to actually pull into traffic to see whats coming, trees and bushes grown out over the cross walks and grass growing over the line of sight! Why doesn't the city of Janesville Police Dept do anything about corners around town that are overgrown and worry a little less about political signs, is it because they are for candidates other than the ones they are supporting?? Its obvious that officers have had to have noticed these areas and have done NOTHING about it at all... I guess its just time to pick the fly droppings out of the pepper again.... I guess it's just a case of "stick to what you do best".
