Evansville High’s football team broke loose on the ground and in the air to soar into the victory column Friday night.


The host Blue Devils (1-1) bounced back from last week’s loss to defending Illinois Class 3A state champion Stillman Valley with a 21-point second quarter that sparked them to a 34-12 nonconfefrence win over Union Grove (0-2).


Dalton Sendelbach rushed 22 times for 108 yards to lead Evansville’s 177-yard ground game. Casey Moseley and Adam Stamm combined for 146 yards passing in sharing duties as the Blue Devils’ quarterback.


Tom Bjugstad got Evansville rolling with a 9-yard touchdown run that capped a 35-yard drive with seven minutes left in the second quarter. Sendelbach scored on a 33-yard run to complete a 58-yard drive with 3:26 remaining in the quarter. Bjugstad then recovered a fumble to set up a 67-yard drive, which Moseley completed with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Dan Walczak with 1:01 remaining as the Blue Devils surged to a 21-0 halftime lead.


Walczak also scored on a 25-yard pass from Stamm in the third quarter and finished with three catches for 62 yards.

n Edgerton 35, Montello 21—An interception return, a kickoff return and a blocked punt for a touchdown carried visiting Edgerton (2-0) to nonconference victory over Montello-Princeton-Green Lake (1-1).


Jarod Schleusner recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown and then scored on a 7-yard run to help put the Crimson Tide up 21-0 at halftime.


Tyler Dobratz returned an interception 47 yards for a third-quarter TD that increased the lead to 27-0.


Montello-Princeton-Green Lake then got to 27-14, but Tyler Oren returned a kickoff 89 yards to put the Crimson Tide in control again.


Oren caught four passes for 74 yards, including a 21-yarder for a touchdown, to open the scoring.

n Columbus 40, Whitewater 7—Bryan Rhode scored three touchdowns as Columbus (1-1) rolled over Whitewater (0-2) in a nonconference game at Perkins Stadium.


Rhode had 1- and 3-yard touchdowns in helping the Cardinals build a 20-0 halftime lead. His third touchdown came on a 3-yard run in the third quarter, and he finished with 27 rushing attempts for 116 yards.


Nick Romani led the Whippets with 13 carries for 133 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.


Columbus quarterback Bryan Baker added two touchdown passes in throwing for 192 yards.

Adam Schluter caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Wedel with 7 minutes, 52 seconds remaining in the game for the victory. Jason Zweifel busted loose for a 32-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to give Lakeside a 7-0 lead.


Drew Davis gained 101 yards on 20 carries to lead Lakeside on the ground.

Brandan Matz gained 139 yards on 22 carries, including a six-yard touchdown run for the Trojans.
