On a down night for the Big Eight Conference, Middleton was the sole shining star.

The Cardinals trailed, 14-8, to visiting Mukwonago at halftime, but the Big Eight's No. 1 seed rallied for 28 unanswered second-half points to win the WIAA Division 1 football opener, 36-14. It was the Big Eight's only playoff win in a 1-4 night.

Scott Carey fought through the windy conditions to throw for the four second-half scores as Middleton (9-1) advanced to Saturday's second-round game.

Carey threw a 6-yard TD pass to Drew Haack to put Middleton ahead, 15-14. He then connected with Luke Meeteer from 7 and 31 yards out, and finished the scoring with another 6-yard scoring pass to Haack.

Carey was 9 of 11 for 101 yards, and also ran for a two-point conversion after Jaime Hofer's first-half TD.

Hofer set up Carey's passing attempts with 260 yards rushing on 36 carries. Hofer scored Middleton's first-half touchdown on a 5-yard run.

Mukwonago (5-5) was outgained 459-238.
