Milton football clinches second in league

Milton High School's football team will head into the WIAA playoffs with a four-game winning streak.


The Red Hawks (6-3, 5-1) completed the regular season Thursday night by turning back visiting Fort Atkinson, 28-7, to wrap up second place in the Badger South.


Milton built a 14-0 lead in the first half with two touchdowns by Ian Johnson, who had an 18-yard scoring run with 1:38 left on the first quarter and 1-yard run with 43 seconds remaining in the half.


Fort Atkinson (2-7, 2-4) pulled within 14-7 after Drew Dunkleberger's 6-yard touchdown passs to Seth Ward with 8:20 left in the third quarter, but Milton finished off the Blackhawks with a 14-point final period. Johnson got his third TD on a 7-yard run with 10:10 remaining, and Evan Phillips threw 36 yards to Phillip McCarthy with 7:47 left.


The Red Hawks played without starting quarterback Nate Hammon, who is sidelined with a concussion. However, Phillips came up big for the second straight game in completing 20 of 30 passes for 216 yards.


Collin Sayre had 14 carries for 113 yards to lead Milton's 202-yard ground game. The Red Hawks' defense limited Fort Atkinson to 25 net yards rushing, including 34 yards lost on sacks of Dunkleberger, who threw for 148 yards.

(9-0, 6-0) clinched a second staight undisputed Badger South championship.


The playoff-bound Silver Eagles rolled to a 28-0 lead in the first half as they ended Stoughton's seasopn at 3-6 and 1-5 in the conference.

-- Edgewood 23, Oregon 6—Seth White completed 11 of 16 passes for 106 and three touchdowns as Madison Edgewood (5-4) may have earned a WIAA playoff spot by finishing the Badger Season with a victory over Oregon (4-5) at Middleton.


Both teams finished 3-3 the conference and will wait to see if .500 is good enough to qualify for the postseason.

-- Monroe 20, Portage 13—John Becker and Dylan Schwitz combined for over 300 yards rushing as the Cheesemakers finished their season with Badger nonconference crossover victory.


Becker had 173 yards rushing, while Schwitz added 133 and two touchdowns.


In wining its last two games, Monroe finished 2-7. Portage wound up 1-8.
