Council OKs police chief for Milton administrator

— The Milton City Council on Thursday unanimously approved a contract to hire Milton Police Chief Jerry Schuetz as the city's new administrator.

Schuetz will earn $73,000 per year, Mayor Tom Chesmore said. Schuetz will be eligible for a review in six months, Chesmore said.


Schuetz' start date as administrator has not been determined, Chesmore said. Schuetz' contract requires him to give the city's police commission 45 days notice to vacate the job, Chesmore said.


The council Thursday night agreed to waive that requirement. But the commission has the authority to make all the police chief hiring decisions, Chesmore said. The council's only role is to approve paying the salary for the new chief, he said.


The city council had approved a maximum salary of $80,000 for the city administrator. Schuetz said as police chief, he's being paid a salary of $71,500.


Schuetz, who has been Milton police chief since 2008, has served as interim city administrator/police chief since former Administrator Todd Schmidt left in September to take a job as village administrator in Waunakee.


Schuetz and village of Brown Deer Administrator Jesse Thyes were the two finalists out of 29 candidates.
