— Fishermen found two bodies in Whitewater Lake on Saturday, the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Sgt. Robert Hall of the sheriff’s office described the bodies as an older man and woman, possibly married.

“Right now, we have an idea who we think the individuals are, but we are still working on a positive identification and notification of family members,” Hall said around 7:20 p.m. Saturday.

The lake has many summer homes but is sparsely populated at this time of year, Hall said.

The bodies showed no apparent cause of death, Hall said. They were taken to Lakeland Medical Center in Elkhorn, where autopsies will be conducted over the next few days under the supervision of the county coroner, Hall said.

Deputies were dispatched to the lake at 3:42 p.m.

Hall said it is impossible to say what might have caused the deaths or whether foul play was involved.

“At this time, everything is under investigation. … Detectives are still going over the area,” Hall said.

The bodies were found in the southern portion of lake, near JNT’s Marina on Chapel Drive in Whitewater Township, Hall said.

It was hard to say how long the bodies had been in the water, he said.

Initially, there was no information on when they actually went into the lake. Yes, Friday was warmer.

Friday was warmer, high of 73 in Janesville. The thought is that the incident happened Friday, and they were found the next day.

Golly, wasn't it kind of nippy for that? Just asking.

I was kayaking on Whitewater Lake at the southern end Thursday September 30 late afternoon. Saw a red & white boat that came across the lake from that marina to the other side sw of the island. After awhile the boat went back across. The people in the boat were not fishing. It was strange & my "gut" was suspicious of what was going on & I kept turning around to watch. Weird! Hope the cause & date of death is learned. How does an elderly couple both go into the lake w/no boat found empty?
