Wisconsin men third at national meet
TERRE HAUTE, IND. Sophomores Mohammed Ahmed, Maverick Darling and senior Landon Peacock led the Univeristy of Wisconsin men’s cross country team to a third-place finish at Monday’s NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Oklahoma State repeated as the men’s champion.
The individual men’s title went to Samuel Chelanga, a Kenyan representing Liberty, and Sheila Reid (20:06.9), a Canadian running for Villanova, was the women’s champ.
Meanwhile, Villanova’s women repeated as champions, too, defeating runner-up Florida State, 120-154. Texas Tech was third with 165.
Wisconsin’s Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Emily Sisson, placed 14th in 20:28.3 as an individual qualifier to earn her first All-America honor.
Sisson has been the top finisher for UW in all five of her races, earning first-team All-Big Ten, first-team All-Region and Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors.
The Wisconsin men secured their NCAA-record 23rd trophy finish (top four), and also extended its consecutive top-10 finish streak to an NCAA-best 15 straight years. UW now owns a record 42 top-10 finishes all-time at the NCAA meet.
UW’s performance also broke a tie with Arkansas to make the Badgers the lone team to finish in the top 15 for a 30th consecutive season. The Badgers’ streak began in 1981.
Ahmed finished 12th in 30:03.4 to earn All-America honors for the second consecutive year. Darling was four seconds behind Ahmed for All-America honors, and Peacock was 20th in 30:15.3 for his second All-America title.
