Gardner scored 11 points in 12 minutes, Dwight Buycks added 17 points and both were keys in a 24-0 second-half run to help Marquette beat Bucknell, 72-61, on Sunday.
“I have a whole lot of confidence in myself. I never get nervous,” Gardner said. “I just go out there and play my game.”
He’d get to play even more, but Williams makes it clear that Gardner must play better on the defensive end after he also scored 17 points in 13 minutes in an opening blowout of Prairie View A&M.
Bucknell (0-2) led 57-45 on a free throw by Joe Willman with 10:32 left, but Marquette (2-0) used a full-court press and started hitting shots while the Bison fell apart in the closing minutes of the regional game in the CBE Classic.
Bryson Johnson led Bucknell with 18 points.
