Events planned for Veterans Day

Area communities are hosting programs Thursday to honor the service of veterans:

ROCK COUNTY

Beloit: Veterans will host a 10 a.m. Thursday ceremony at Grinnell Hall, 631 Bluff St., before retiring to the parking lot for an 11:11 a.m. ceremony. The outdoor portion of the program will be in the parking lot connecting the hall and the American Legion at 236 St. Lawrence Ave., Beloit. Coffee and doughnuts will be served.

Brodhead: Veterans will take part in a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Albrecht Elementary School, 1400 21st St. Veterans and their spouses are invited for coffee and doughnuts starting at 8:45 a.m. For questions, call David Novy, elementary principal, at (608) 897-2146, Ext. 300.

Evansville: The VFW Post 6905 will hold a steak feed for Evansville area veterans from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the VFW, 179 E. Main St. Evansville veterans should call (608) 882-2335 to reserve a spot.

Janesville: Rock County Sheriff Bob Spoden will be the guest speaker of the 10:30 a.m. ceremony that will honor veterans at the Veterans Walkway and Eternal Flame, Traxler Park.

The program will include Chaplain Al Funk, the National Anthem and another song, a salute to the military services branches and Janesville Patriotic Society color guard.

Members of the Associates of Rock River Chapter 236 Vietnam Veterans of America will host a 9:30 a.m. coffee and doughnuts hour in the Traxler Park Warming House, where a chili and cake luncheon, provided by the American Legion and Auxiliary, will begin immediately after the ceremony.

Retired National Guard Col. Mike Williams will speak about the significance of Veterans Day during the Richard Ellis American Legion Post program, including a color guard, at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at the Janesville Senior Center, 69 S. Water St.

Blackhawk Technical College will host a wreath-laying ceremony at 11:11 a.m. Thursday at the circular drive in front of the main building on the central campus, 6004 S. County G, Janesville.

Orfordville: Kenneth S. Wells American Legion Post, Auxiliary Unit and SAL Squadron 209 Orfordville, will have their traditional Veterans Day program at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Parkview High School. The public is invited.

Several Parkview students, including the concert choir, will take part in the program. Master of ceremonies will be CPO Kurt Stuvengen, USN retired. Speaker will be Parkview alumna, 1st Lt. Amanda Beers, attached to Wisconsin's 467th Medical Unit, who recently returned from Afghanistan.

The Legion Firing Squad will give their three-volley salute at Memorial Park following the program at the high school and later at Kenneth Wells' gravesite in the nearby cemetery.

WALWORTH COUNTY

Delavan: Veterans, military members who have served and those who are currently serving will receive free admission to the Walworth County Business Network event at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The event, in honor of veterans, is at Delavan Lake Resort, 1505 S. Shore Drive.

A 235th birthday celebration for the U.S. Marine Corps will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Delavan Veterans Memorial Building, 111 S. Second St., Delavan. East Troy: A Salute to Veterans exhibit will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Kubicki Museum and Heritage Center, 2106 Church St., on the square. The exhibit will feature photographs and other memorabilia from local veterans.

Elkhorn: A program honoring veterans will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at Tibbets Elementary School, W5218 County A, Sugar Creek Township. It is open to the public.

Members of the American Legion will offer a rifle salute at 11 a.m. Thursday at Walworth and Wisconsin streets in downtown Elkhorn.

Fontana/Walworth: Fontana Elementary School's fifth-grade class is holding a Veteran's Day program at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, followed by a complimentary lunch. It's open to the public.

Genoa City: A ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at Brookwood Middle School. It's expected to last about an hour.

Lake Geneva: A Veterans Day ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the gym at Lake Geneva Middle School, 600 N. Bloomfield Road. The ceremony is open to the public.

At 11:11 a.m. Thursday, American Legion members will present a 21-gun salute at Main and Broad streets in downtown Lake Geneva.

Sharon: Children will start assembling around 10:40 a.m. at Sharon Community School in time for an 11:11 a.m. ceremony. Children will give presentations, and the ceremony will include a firing squad and the playing of Taps. The public is welcome. "The more the merrier," American Legion Post 130 member Jerry Gibbons said.

Whitewater: A free showing of "The Hurt Locker" will be offered at 7 p.m. today in Summers Auditorium, inside the University Center at UW-Whitewater.

A display of historic military uniforms will be open through Nov. 15 at Fiskum Gallery inside the University Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

A veterans recognition ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the university's alumni center.
