— The University of Wisconsin women's basketball team won its exhibition opener Thursday night, but got a scare when its best player, Alyssa Karel, left with an injury midway through the first half.

Tara Steinbauer scored 15 points and Morgan Paige added 12 to lead the Badgers to an 83-52 win over Winona State at the Kohl Center. The senior guard Karel, a pre-season All-Big Ten first-team selection, hurt her knee in the first half and did not return.

"Alyssa's gonna be OK. She will not play on Sunday. She has an injury to her knee. That's all I can say," Wisconsin coach Lisa Stone said. "Optimism is very good. I wanted to make sure her parents knew that when I came out of the locker room, but that scares you. She's an awful special kid, and I'm glad to know that she's gonna be OK.

"It's awfully scary. I walked into the hallway at halftime and (strength coach) Ray Eady said, ‘It's like a preseason NFL game.' You just hope and pray that nothing happens."
