Field set for WIAA state track meet
Clinton High junior Laura Popanz is in a class by herself, at least as far as area track and field athletes are concerned.
Popanz is advancing to the girls WIAA Division 2 state meet in the 200-meter dash as the immediate areaís only individual extra qualifier. She previously qualified Thursday night with a third-place finish of 12.58 seconds in the 100-meter dash at the Whitewater Sectional, then earned her spot in the 200 on Friday when her fifth-place time of 25.78 met the qualifying standards.
Typical of recent years, there arenít many extra qualifiers from across the state in any boys or girls division for next weekendís competition at La Crosse. Division 1 boys has only two, but none from this immediate area. Division 3 boys and girls each have nine, followed by Division 1 girls and Division 2 boys with eight apiece.
Turner, which competed in the Division 2 sectional at Boscobel, picked up an extra qualifier via the 800-meter relay. The team of Brandon Struebin, Tim Laursen, Zach Sherrod and Paul Sorenson advanced with fifth-place time of 1:31.74 that matched the qualifying standard.
The top four finishers in each event in Divisions 2, 3 and 4 earned automatic berths, as did the top three in Division 1.
The only extra qualifier out of the Division 1 sectional at Lake Geneva Badger, which included the Janesville schools, is Westosha Central sophomore high-jumper Lauren Ineichen with a fourth-place height of 5 feet, 2 inches.
Westby senior Kenny Schuttemeier and Richland Center sophomore Austin Kenefick each reached 13 feet in the pole vault to become extra qualifiers in boys competition at Boscobel. The only other extra qualifier among boys there is
La Crosse Aquinas freshman Michael Christianson with a 4:28.61 time in the 1,600.
Mashall senior Ashleigh Giese (2:19.29 in 800), Wisconsin Dells senior Taylor Hickey (5:16.51 in 1,600) and Watertown Luther Prep junior Emily Koltz (11:29.56 in 3,200) are the only girls extra qualifiers from Boscobel.
Popanz is joined by Waupunís Samantha Haas
(17-0.5 in long jump) as the only girls extra qualifiers from Whitewater. The only boys extra qualifiers from that sectional are Lomiraís Mike Nett
(43-1 in triple jump), Milwaukee Messmerís Maurice Baldwin (42-11.5 in the triple jump) and Riponís Connor Hanson (11.29 in 100).
Albany runners still going
Itís the post-Jake Lincicum era at Albany High School, but the Comets still have the runners who can go the distance.
Albany showed it again Thursday night in the Bangor Sectional by advancing senior Tyler Conley, junior Drew Mather and both of its 3,200-meter relay teams to next weekendís WIAA Division 3 state track and field meet at
Conley won the sectional championship in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.04. Mather was second in the 3,200 at 10:09.1.
Conley and Mather were joined by freshman Jose Ramirez and sophomore Reece Whitehead in giving Albany a sectional-championship performance of 8:19.37 in the 3,200 relay. That earned the Cometsí team a return trip to state, with Mather as the only returning member.
Albany also is making a return trip in the girls 3,200 relay. Sophomore Jessica Mauerman, junior Rosy Bauman and sophomore Ciara Kubesh are returning members, joined by junior Courtney Pfeuti, on a team that was second in the sectional with a 10:15.94 time.
