Janesville's city website will list property ownership information, despite objections from City Council Member Frank Perrotto.

Perrotto says the plan is well thought-out, but he believes the city should do everything it can to preserve the privacy of property owners. He also says the county offers a similar service and it doesn't make sense to duplicate the information.

Administrative Intern Max Gagin told the council the move could actually save the city money, since staff members wouldn't spend time answering phone calls looking for information. Council Member Yuri Rashkin says it's public information that's already available. He says he listens to the staff recommendations carefully because they are the people dealing with the specific situation.

The council approved the online access Monday.

The information will not be searchable by name.

Why is there a box advertising "FREE MARRIAGE RECORDS" on this page when once you get to the site you are informed you cannot get the info without being a 'member'? I would assume membership requires a 'fee'.
