Gladiators open season with victory

— The Rock County Gladiators semipro football team defeated the Milwaukee Storm, 16-12, in an Ironman Football League season opener Saturday at Monterey Stadium.

Jermar Ayers, a Janesville Parker High School graduate, caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jeff Supernaw, a Delavan-Darien High graduate, with 54 seconds remaining for the winning touchdown.

The Strorm led 6-3 at the half. Derek Wickhem kicked a 25-yard field goal for the Gladiators' first score in the second quarter.

Supernaw also hit Marchez Range for a 50-yard touchdown pass to put the Gladiators ahead, 9-6, in the fourth quarter. The Storm took a 12-10 lead on a 4-yard touchdown run with 1:34 to play.

Supernaw completed 11 of 25 passes for 277 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Gladiators' Jia Parte gained 20 yards on five carries.

The Gladiators host the Wauwatosa Spartans on Saturday, June 5 at 6 p.m. at Monterey Stadium.
