Track will be memorial to Van Buren school teacher
A run/walk benefit is set for Friday at Van Buren Elementary School, 1515 Lapham St., to raise money for the track.
Classes are signed up to walk during the school day, and the public is invited to join in from 3 to 5:30 p.m.
Cain established a Friday afternoon fitness walk on the grassy field at the school, Principal Kori Settersten said. The route was used so much that a 400-meter path was worn into the lawn.
Settersten said she got an $18,000 estimate for a three-lane, 400-meter asphalt track. The Van Buren PTA contributed $6,400. Another $2,000 was raised by selling wristbands.
The wristbands said "Remembering Mr. Cain" and "Get Yourself Moving."
Cain liked to wear a T-shirt with the words "get yourself moving," whose initials spell out "gym."
Settersten said if the run/walk does not raise the rest of the money needed, another fundraiser probably would be held next fall, so it's possible the track could be ready before winter sets in.
The project would have to go through the school district's competitive bidding process, Settersten said.
Cain was 58 when he died unexpectedly after a minor medical procedure Nov. 19, 2009.
Children are walking for donations. Bottled water and bracelets will be sold at the event for $1 each. All proceeds will go toward the installation of the track.
Checks can be made out to School District of Janesville.
