— Janesville Craig High School lost a 7-0 lead but fought back to defeat Middleton, 11-10, in Big Eight Conference softball Wednesday.

The Cougars led 7-0 after two innings, but Middleton scored twice in the third and five times in the fourth to knot the game, 7-7.

"We had a 7-0 lead and were playing well," Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said. "Middleton brought in a new pitcher and it got us off balance, and they started scoring runs."

The teams combined for 29 hits. Craig collected 15 hits.

"I've got to give our kids credit," Bayreuther said. "The lead evaporated, and we came back. I hope our girls grew up playing with their backs to the wall."

Kelly Moench hit a two-run single in the sixth to put Craig ahead, 11-8, and secure the lead for good.

Middleton scored twice in the seventh and had the tying run on second base with one out, but Paige Weber pitched out of the jam for the Craig victory.

"Our girls found a way to win," Bayreuther said. "It wasn't easy."

Craig (14-2, 16-4) hosts Madison West at 4 p.m. today.
