— Mark Voeller, a Whitewater native, carded a 1-over-par 71 to make it through the U.S. Open opening-round local qualifying Tuesday at Ozaukee Country Club.

Voeller is one of five to advance to sectional qualifying at 13 sites around the country on June 7, including one in Woodstock, Ill.

Voeller, a PGA teaching professional at Golf Galaxy in Brookfield, went off the back nine at 10 a.m. and shot an even par. He birdied No. 3 before bogeys at Nos. 5 and 8 forced him to play the waiting game for more than an hour as the others in the 79-player field finished their rounds.

Former University of Wisconsin golfers Patrick Duffy and Ryan Helminen also qualified. Duffy finished second with a 70 and Helminen cared a 71 despite a bogey on No. 18 that dropped him into a tie with Voeller and Wauwatosa’s Andrew Stein.

Sam Van Galder of Janesville, fired a 11-over 81 and finished in a seven-way tie for 38th. Matt Vandlac of Hayward shot a 2-under 68 for medalist honors.

The U.S. Open is June 17-20 at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
