— Janesville Craig softball coach Dan Bayreuther had no complaints after the Cougars' 8-1 Big Eight Conference victory over Madison East at Olbrich Park on Tuesday.

"We just played a fundamentally sound game in all three facets," said Bayreuther. "We had good hitting, good pitching and didn't have any errors. I was pretty happy with how things went."

Craig improved to 15-4 overall and 13-2 in the Big Eight.

The Cougars scored single runs in the first and second innings, then added two in the third that put them clearly in control. Craig tacked on three more in the fourth and another in the seventh.

In the third, Haley Bayreuther singled, and Stephanie Perleberg followed with the first of her two triples to drive in Bayreuther. Gabrielle Cassady then put down a suicide-squeeze bunt to score Perleberg, giving Craig a 4-0 lead.

Cassady tried to advance to third on the bunt after an East throwing error, but was tagged out when her hand slipped off the base.

Craig pitcher Paige Weber scattered six hits and struck out five.

"Paige did a great job," Dan Bayreuther said. "She had a good rise ball today and threw a few more change-ups. Overall, she gave up six hits to six different kids."

The Cougars play at 5 p.m. today at Middleton in a makeup game.
