Top-seed Luther wins tournament opener
Top-seeded Luther College of Decorah, Iowa, powered its way to victory in the first game of the NCAA Division III softball regional at UW-Whitewater.
Tiffany Kruse, the second-leading home-run hitter in Division III, connected on two homers and drove in four runs Friday to lead the Norse past St. Norbert, 5-1.
Luther (38-5) notched its 13th straight win in breaking the Green Knights’ 13-game winning streak.
St. Norbert (30-7) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Kruse hit her 14th home run of the season with two outs in the bottom of the inning to gave Luther a 3-1 lead.
Senior right-hander Kelsey Epping pitched a three-hitter in leading Carthage (25-13) past Alma, Mich. Designated hitter Alyssa Schroeder’s leadoff homer in the second gave Carthage the only run it needed.
Catcher Karlee Quaritsch broke up a no-hitter with a grand slam in the sixth to give Augustana (Ill.) a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Redlands (Calif.). Augustana had loaded the bases with two walks and an error.
Quaritsch’s homer was the only hit off Redlands pitcher Olivia Ellis.
