— Whitney Oliver’s speed paved the way for Janesville Craig’s softball victory Thursday at Dawson Field.

Oliver singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, stole second, and scored on Erica Mortensen’s ground ball in Craig High’s 2-1 Big Eight Conference win over Madison Memorial.

The Cougars (13-4, 11-2) remained one game behind front-running Verona in the conference.

Paige Weber pitched a complete game in picking up the victory. Weber struck out six and allowed no walks.

“It’s always nice to get a win, but we’ve got to start swinging the bats better than we have the last couple of games,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said.

“Today, it was a matter of taking advantage of a couple of opportunities that Memorial gave us, but you can’t always get by doing that.”

The Cougars will play crosstown rival Janesville Parker at 4 p.m. today at Dawson Field.
