— A promising start turned into a disappointing finish for Janesville Craig High School’s baseball team Saturday afternoon at Riverside Park.

After taking a 4-2 lead in the first game of a Big Eight Conference doubleheader with Middleton, the Cougars unraveled.

The second-ranked Cardinals took advantage of five Cougar errors to pull away for an 11-5 win in Game 1 before holding on for an 8-5 victory in Game 2.

Middleton (14-2, 10-2) retained sole possession of first place in the Big Eight. Craig, thanks to 10 errors in two games, fell to 6-6 in the conference and 9-8 overall.

“We were sitting in good shape in Game 1, and then all of a sudden we couldn’t get that third out in the fifth,” Craig coach Vic Herbst said. “You’ve got to make plays in the field, especially against a team like Middleton.

“After that, I thought our effort was lackluster, especially in the second game. You can’t get down and feel sorry for yourself. We needed to put that first game behind us, and I’m not sure we did that right away in Game 2.”

Cody Steed threw well for the Cougars in Game 1, but the defense let him down. Tom Yaucher’s two-run single gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, and it was 4-2 in the sixth before Middleton scored four unearned runs to take the lead for good.

Christian DeCremer and Tyler Bloom had RBIs for Craig in Game 2, but Middleton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and was never threatened.

Senior Dylan Acker got the complete-game victory in game two for the Cardinals. The righthander cruised through the first six innings, allowing only one run, but two Middleton errors led to three unearned runs in the seventh.
