— Not even miserable conditions could spoil Mark Marsden’s mood Friday night.

The Janesville Craig High School girls track and field coach saw his young Cougars win the Demon Invitational.

The Cougars finished with 134 points to win the eight–team invitational.

Janesville Parker, behind a first-place finish from Paige Demos in the high jump, finished fourth.

Janesville Craig’s boys, led by Cy Badertscher’s win in the triple jump and the 3,200 relay team’s victory, finished third with 110. Menomonee Falls won the eight-team title with 120, with host Burlington second with 114..

The Cougar girls, who got individual wins from freshman Maggie Slatter in the 100 and senior Caroline Shea in the 400, continue to improve.

“I’m very pleased with the way this team has come on,” Marsden said. “We’re still pretty young, but we’ve shown improvement each and every week.

“Our depth is as good as it has ever been, and that was the difference tonight.”

Craig boys coach Jeff Deininger also was pleased with his team’s performance.

“We just missed finishing second, and in a meet with as much talent as this one, that’s pretty good,” Deininger said.

“The meet started out great for us when the 3,200 relay team won. I put those four (Alex Crandall, Matt Bordwell, Spencer Hrycay and Tommy Meister) together for just this meet, and they responded by running a great race.”

Demos cleared 5-foot to win the high jump and pace the Parker girls.

“We had a pretty good day,” Parker coach Dave Lehmann said of his team. “To finish fourth and pick up a number of medals, shows that we’re improving.”
