Doubles spark Janesville Parker’s win
The Vikings swept all three doubles matches to edge Janesville Craig, 4-3, in a Big Eight Conference thriller on the Parker courts.
Parker High (3-3 in Big Eight) did not lose a set in doubles play.
“The match kind of played out pretty close to the way we thought it would,” Parker coach Mike Fuhrmann said. “We thought our experience in doubles would be the difference, and it was.
“And even though we lost three of the four matches in singles, I was happy with the way they played, too.”
Matt Knutson improved to 7-4 on the season with a straight-set win for Parker at No. 1 singles.
Craig (2-3) got wins from Stewart Winter, Marvin Wendtland and Derek Masters at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
“We just fell a little short today,” Craig first-year coach Justin Long said. “And like Mike (Fuhrmann) said, it came down to Parker’s experience in doubles.
“But to get wins in three of the four singles matches says a lot about how hard we competed today. They were close matches, and our guys found a way.”
Parker won the match thanks to victories at No. 1 doubles from Craig Spangler and Cody Papcke, at No. 2 doubles from Ian Weiland and Nick Gilbank, and at No. 3 doubles from Kitchell Garey and Ryan Ploof.
The Vikings compete in the Stoughton Invitational on Saturday, while the Cougars are at the Watertown Quadrangular.
