— A one-minute lapse in the first half doomed Janesville Craig’s girls soccer team Tuesday night.

Middleton scored three goals in one minute and went on to a 5-0 Big Eight Conference win over the Cougars.

Craig (4-7-2, 2-3) limited the sixth-ranked Cardinals to one goal in the second half but could not dig out of a 4-0 hole.

“For some reason, we struggle against really good teams in the first half,” Craig High coach Bill McCabe said. “I don’t know if it’s nerves or what, but once we settle down, like tonight, we play them pretty even.

“We had a breakdown defensively in that one-minute span, and you can’t have that kind of lapse against a team as good as Middleton.”

Craig goalie Amanda Hamilton made 16 saves.

The Cougars play at Janesville Parker on Thursday night.
