Pitchers lead Albion to opening victory
Albion’s pitchers took charge Sunday to give the Tigers a winning start in Home Talent League baseball.
Justin Lambert and Mike Nanstad combined for a two-hitter as the visiting Tigers shut out Stoughton, 4-0, in the West Division of the Southeast Section.
Corey Vickers and Ben Everson led Albion with two hits apiece and sparked a three-run fifth inning.
Vickers opened the rally with a double, and Casey Schmeling followed with an infield single. The runners moved up on Aaron Manogue’s second sacrifice of the game and scored on a single by Everson, who later scored Ethan Vaade’s single and an error.
Other Southeast openers:
-- McFarland 5, Evansville 0—Jarek Jermier struck out 12 in eight innings, and reliever Cory Schuchardt completed the four-hit pitching for newcomer McFarland as it made its Southeast debut with a victory at Evansville.
Pete Patten and Bob Marczalek each hit two of McFarland’s seven hits off Brent Cashore, who struck out eight. Mike Elmer had two hits for Evansville.
-- Utica 2, Orfordville 1—Utica scored on a sacrifice fly in the first and a fielder’s choice in the seventh to slip past the Orioles.
Kyle Bates struck out nine in pitching a five-hitter for Utica. Alex Pratt also had a five-hitter for Orfordville and struck out eight.
-- Lake Mills 9, Whitewater 5—Keith McFarlane had two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in seven runs to lead Lake Mills past the Swingers.
-- Fort Atkinson 12, Cambridge 1—Bobby Bastien’s three RBIs led defending Southeast champion Fort Atkinson’s blowout of Cambridge.
The Generals built a 7-0 lead in a five-run third inning and finished with 14 hits.
-- Deerfield 7, Jefferson 5—Jeff Coffey’s two-run double put Deerfield ahead in a four-run eighth inning that wiped out Jefferson’s 4-3 lead.
