What: Public hearing on Five Points study

When: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday

Where: Community Room, Whitewater City Hall, 312 W. Whitewater St., Whitewater.

Residents are invited to learn more about options to improve safety through the Five Points intersection on the southwest side of the Whitewater.

At a public hearing Monday, an engineer will present the results of a recent study of the intersection, which includes Janesville Street and Walworth Avenue.

Strand Associates of Madison evaluated several options, including installing traffic signals, building a roundabout or realigning the intersection.

The study indicates a three-leg roundabout might be the best option because it would reduce the number of vehicle conflict points.

But the study also indicates that a roundabout might create difficulties for traffic traveling from westbound Walworth Avenue to northbound Janesville Street and through traffic traveling on Walworth Avenue.

The study found that installing traffic signals would be cheaper and have less impact on nearby properties than building a roundabout even though traffic counts would not warrant signals for many years.

Residents are invited to review the study and make verbal or written comments after the presentation.
