March 31, 2010

The write-in candidate who receives the most votes will fill the District 2 seat on the Whitewater City Council.

Incumbent Max Taylor did not file a statement of non-candidacy by the deadline but told the city he is not seeking re-election. No district residents filed papers to be on the ballot, but two people have registered as write-in candidates.

Bios

Heather Murray (write-in)

Age: 22

Address: 1008 W. Starin Road, No. 121, Whitewater.

Job: Senior at UW-Whitewater. Intern at Fair Wisconsin, Madison.

Education: Studying mathematics and English at UW-Whitewater.

Community service: Founder of the UW-Whitewater BRIDGE club, a support and social group for transgender students; founder of the Interested Ladies of Gamma Rho Lambda, an interest group for the national sorority.

Elected posts: None.

Major campaign issues: I'm concerned about strengthening the students' and the community's relationship. I'm also concerned about pedestrian safety. I know a lot of students who live in the dorms and students with disabilities, and it's all about getting to and from campus safely.

Devon Wallace (write-in)

Age: 20

Address: 347 N. Tratt St., Whitewater.

Job: Sophomore at UW-Whitewater.

Education: Studying secondary mathematics education at UW-Whitewater.

Community service: Member of the Whitewater Lions Club; founder and president of the UW-Whitewater chess club.

Elected posts: None.

Major campaign issue: I feel that there is a gap between the students of Whitewater and the city of Whitewater. I think we could bridge that gap by increasing the number of businesses that appeal to students, like more food options or shopping and entertainment options that would get them off campus and into the community.
