Janesville trio earn gymnastics honors

Janesville Craig’s Becky Schneider and Sara Ennocenti, and Janesville Parker’s Erika Whitson have been named first-team all-state by the Wisconsin High School Gymnastics Coaches Association.

Schneider earned her honor in the all-around event. That came after she took first place in the WIAA state meet and had a 36.679 season average.

Schneider also finished third on the balance beam and sixth on the uneven parallel bars at the state meet. She won Big Eight titles on the vault, uneven bars and balance beam and was the conference all-around winner.

This is the second all-state award the Cougar sophomore has received.

Ennocenti, a junior, gained all-state honors on the vault, where she also won a state championship.

Schneider is the first state all-around champion in school history, and Ennocenti is the second state vault champion.

Ennocenti had a 9.265 season average in the event. She won medals at the Big Eight meet on the vault, beam and in all-around, and she qualified for state on the vault for the second straight year.

She was elected Craig’s most dedicated athlete and co-captain.

Whitson earned her all-state spot in the floor exercise. The junior won that event in the Big Eight meet with a 9.45 had a 9.483 season average.

Whitson finished second in the sectional meet with a 9.5. She has qualified for the state meet three straight years.

Whitson, a Parker co-captain with Emily Mauermann, was voted the team’s MVP.

She holds the school record for every event except the vault, and she broke her own record on the beam twice in one week this season.

Parker’s Mauermann and Craig’s Ashley McGoey each have gained all-state second-team honors.

Mauermann, a junior, got her recognition on the uneven bars with an 8.394 average. McGoey, a freshman, excelled on the balance beam, where she had an 8.764 average.

Craig’s Ashley Pohlman has earned all-state honorable mention in the all-around. The freshman averaged 33.53.

Marlee Brunow and Michelle Dakle of Burlington/Lake Geneva Badger/Wilmot lead the area gymnasts who gained Division 1 honors. Brunow earned a first-team spot on the bars by averaging 8.88, while Dakle made the first-team in the floor exercise with a 9.37 average.

Lauren Otter, Kerry Leonard and Alice Gordon, all from the Burlington/Lake Geneva Badger/Wilmot co-op team, have each earned second-team honors. Otter and Leonard made it on the balance beam, while Gordon gained her honor on the vault.

Stephanie Weber of Burlington/Badger/Wilmot earned honor mention on the floor exercise.

Division 2

Elkhorn’s Randi Fuller, and Milton’s Cassie Cropp each gained coaches’ first-team honors on the balance beam, while Whitewater’s Kim Stonewerth earned top honors on the vault.

Fuller, a freshman, finished second at state in the balance beam with a 9.15 performance. She averaged 8.867.

Cropp averaged 8.8 on the beam to earn her first-team honors.

Stonewerth, a junior, scored a 9.433 to win the Division 2 state vault title. She averaged 9.29 to gain all-state honors.

Milton’s Jessica Alf has received second-team all-state honors in the all-around.

Area recipients of all-state honorable mention are Whitewater’s Tessa Hennessy, bars; Shaundra Rasmussen, balance beam, and Sonia Soto, vault; and Milton’s Anna Bailey, floor exercise.

All-Academic

Nine Janesville Parker and three Janesville Craig gymnastics have earned Division 1 all-state academic recognition.

Parker recipients are juniors Emily Mauermann, Nicole Popovich, Stephanie Miller and Erika Whitson, and sophomores Caroline Mitchell, Meridith Little, Skye Kilkenny, Jenna Carr and Kristin Zeilinger. They are joined by Craig’s Nikki Glowacki, Becky Schneider and Sara Ennocenti.

Kerry Leonard, Michelle Dakle and Alice Gordon of the Burlington/Lake Geneva Badger/Wilmot co-op also have received academic recognition.

To earn all-academic honors, gymnasts must have at least a 3.2 grade-point average, be in the top third of their class, have no code violations and be nominated by a member of the coaches association.
