— A small Army Reserve unit with members from southern Wisconsin will soon be on its way to Afghanistan.

A deployment ceremony for family and friends is set for 2 to 2:30 p.m. today at the William J. Huempfner U.S. Army Reserve Center at 2426 Prairie Ave., Beloit.

Members of the 11-member unit are from Wisconsin—including Beloit, Janesville and Milwaukee—Illinois and three other states, according to an Army news release.

The unit specializes in preventive medicine. Its duties include providing medical support in the areas of entomology, disease, non-battle injury prevention, field sanitation and epidemiology to minimize the effects of intestinal and other diseases and health threats.

The unit will train and prepare for deployment at Fort Lewis, Wash., before leaving for Afghanistan. The detachment’s commander is Capt. David E. Weitzel.
