Cornell's Jon Jaques (25) and Wisconsin's Jordan Taylor go after a loose ball during the second half of an NCAA second-round college basketball game in Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday, March 21, 2010.

— Hey Big Blue, here comes Big Red!

Louis Dale scored 26 points, Ryan Wittman added 24 and No. 12 seed Cornell upset fourth-seeded Wisconsin 87-69 on Sunday, becoming the first team from the Ivy League since 1979 to advance to the round of 16.

The Big Red (27-8) will play top-seeded Kentucky in the East Regional semifinal Thursday in Syracuse, N.Y., about an hour from Cornell's campus. It could be a tough ticket, though, since Kentucky's basketball-crazed fans got a head start when the Wildcats advanced Saturday.

Cornell wasted little time taking care of its end.

The Big Red controlled things from the opening tip, picking apart Wisconsin's vaunted defense the same way they did Temple in the opening round.

Cornell had a 12-point lead early, a 20-point lead late and very few moments of concern in between. The lopsided affair should make for some interesting conversation this week at the "Dog Pound," the nickname given to the three-story, off-campus house that 13 players and a team manager call home.

Cornell became the lowest seed to advance to the round of 16 in this year's tournament and the first Ivy League team to get that far since Penn 31 years ago.

Wisconsin (24-9), meanwhile, failed to get past the opening weekend for the fourth time in five years.

Jon Leuer led the Badgers with 23 points, including the team's first 12. Jason Bohannon added 18, Ryan Evans chipped in 11 and Trevon Hughes finished with 10.

But Wisconsin's problem was defense.

Cornell shot 61 percent from the field, 53 percent from 3-point range and just dominated every aspect of the matchup. Anyone believe the Big Red were seeded correctly now?

Jeff Foote had 12 points and seven rebounds. Chris Wroblewski added 12 points, and Jon Jaques finished with nine before fouling out.

When it was over — it was really over in the opening minutes — Cornell players jumped up and down, ran over to their fans and just stood around.

Forgive them for not knowing how to celebrate. After all, they hadn't won a game in the NCAA tournament in three previous trips. Now, they have two in three days — both against ranked teams.

Cornell couldn't miss to start this one. The Big Red made their first five shots. Wittman hit consecutive jumpers, getting open thanks to hard picks. Jaques turned a steal into a layup, added a turnaround jumper and then drained a 3-pointer from the corner.

They led 16-4 with a little more than 5 minutes gone. Things were going so well that even their misses weren't all bad. Foote rebounded Wittman's first miss and tossed it back to the sharpshooter, who swished a 3 from the top. Cornell got offensive rebounds on its first four misses.

Leuer kept Wisconsin in the game. He scored the Badgers' first 12 points, getting to the free throw line, hitting turnaround jumpers and even two 3-pointers.

Bohannon, held scoreless for the first time in more than a year in Friday's win over Wofford, scored seven points in a stretch that helped the Badgers cut the double-digit deficit to 24-21 with 7:01 to play.

But Cornell buckled down on defense and then got hot again on the other end. Wittman connected from behind the arc with the shot clock winding down. Dale, playing with a sore right wrist, threw up another 3 with a second left on the shot clock. This one came up short, but Foote got the rebound and found Wroblewski open for another 3.

The Big Red shot 59 percent from the field in the first half and led 43-31. It tied the most points defensive-minded Wisconsin had allowed all season. Gonzaga scored 43 in the first half en route to a 74-61 victory over the Badgers in the Maui Classic.

Things got worse after halftime.

Also
Ryan has done a fantastic job at wisconsin!
His job is totally safe.
As 'kiowamohican' and some of the Vegas basketball betting 'sharps' detailed in their analysis of that Cornell game, the Badgers just matched up horribly. You can't blame the coach when you simply don't match up. Ryan is an outstanding basketball coach, who gets the very most of the talent he has. Hopefully he will get some prize recruits down the road. If he has top talent, I'll put him up against any of the big name coaches.

sarahB:
The coach can revoke a scholarship at any time, if he deems behavior detromental to the team. They are NOT guaranteed for the 4 years you are there. It's the classic 'code of conduct' clause, much like most people have at their place of employment. If you do anything which viotates that code of conduct, you can be dismissed from the team, and your scholarship revoked. The player can appeal that, but it often is final if the coach revokes it.

The thing that is pretty remarkable about Cornell beating the Badgers is that in the Ivy League there are NO sholorships for athletics. So all those kids are playing with no scholarship! That is really something to beat a power coference team that has prize recruits, and full scholarship athletes. If they would beat kentucky tha would be an upset beyond belief. considering Kentucky has 3 guys who were McDonalds all Americans, and likely top 10 NBA draft picks!

tracco - don't make yourself look like a bigger idiot. Bo Ryan has already been past the Sweet 16. 2005 Elite 8, Wisconsin nearly took down eventual champion UNC, a UNC team that was loaded with pro talent.

Oh well, the hockey team is better this year anyways. They head into their tourney as a #1 seed. Go Bucky!

Most scholarships are not guaranteed for all four years. Each year following the season the players meet with their coaches and at that time they are renewed, scaled back or eliminated. In the main sports they are almost always renewed but given the circumstances of those two jokers, Bo should have those scholarships back to give to additional players.

I think Bo Ryan is a great coach and needs to stay right where he is. I also think Cornell is a much better team than most people thought. We had to shoot from the outside because Cornell's man-to-man defense kept us from getting inside. Look at how many times we fought to get the ball inside only to have to force an outside shot as the shot clock counted down to nearly zero. I do have a question for those that follow the Badgers more thoroughly than me: Did Wisconsin reuse the scholarships that had gone to the two freshmen who were booted from the team during early fall semester after they were charged with burglarizing dorm rooms?

Stick to pocket pool tracco6...you know nothing about basketball! Ryan is an excellent coach who typically takes his teams MUCH farther than they are anticipated to go. It was nankivil who hacked his way to playing only 5 minutes, It was Trevon turning the ball over and launching air balls. It was Taylor only seeing limited minutes due to fouls in the first half. If a coach is only judged by how far his team goes in the tourney then the likes of Bill Self @ Kansas, Roy Williams @ North carolina and Jim calhoun @ UCONN are bad coaches who should be looking for a D-3 job.

tracco6 - If you think Bo Ryan is the problem, you are a complete moron that knows nothing about the game. It's that simple.

Tracco, you're an idiot - so you want to fire Bo Ryan and bring in......??? I know you're mad we lost, but stop throwing your little tantrum and reread what you posted. I'm guessing you probably thought UW was wrong in not keeping Brad Soderberg after Dick Bennett left? Bo is a great coach who makes lemonade out of lemons. Last time I checked, Wisconsin was not the #1 destination for top high school players with the Dukes, UConns and Floridas of the world. Bravo to the Badgers on a great season and for overcoming a LOT of adversity to give us a solid product yet again.

Bo is a solid coach who has delivered a good program of basketball at UW.
We just don't have the "tradition" to build anything more than we've seen.....once in a while we get embarrassed....enjoy the big picture....

Bo Ryan is a excellent coach. They had a great season. We can not win all the time. I was disappointed as well, but I love my Badgers. Bo is great and there will be next year.

Have to hand it to my man....the poster on this blog known as 'kiowamohican'
Not only did he say Cornell would win the game, he said they would 'destroy them by double digits!'.
He is at the top of many major bracket contests after today.
I think he is the only person in the country who called N Iowa over UNLV, and then over KU!

Get rid of Bo? Are you an idiot? He's one of the best coaches in all of college basketball! Lest we forget that Wisconsin did not garner a single vote in any polls at the beginning of the season. Bo took a bunch of nobodies and made them into a top 25 team.
.
Cornell is highly under-seeded because they're an Ivy League team, they've obviously proven their last two games they can play with anyone in the country. In fact, during the regular season, they nearly beat Kansas at Kansas! Wisconsin struggled down the stretch at home and on the road; it seemed like once Leuer came back they couldn't get that same rhythm going again they had early in the season. You can't blame the coach for Hughes turning over the ball more than a half-dozen times and Bohannon going 1-15 combined against Illinois and Wofford. Wisconsin has a very young and athletic team, and has a lot of promise for the next few years. Leuer is a stud, and Taylor has potential to be one of the best guards in the Big 10 next season.

Typical bo Ryan team good at home. go on the road and lose a game they should win. they isnt any consistency with this team.they really dont have great athletes on this team.all they do is like to shoot the 3 pointer.after jon leuer who do they have thats any good on this team. its time for wisconsin to get rid of bo. youre judged on how far you make it in this tourney, and bo has taken this team nowhere.
