— A big run set the tone early for the Hartland Arrowhead boys basketball team Thursday night. Then the big man took over late.

The ninth-ranked War-hawks scored 10 straight points to close the first quarter, and 7-foot-1 senior center Ben Mills finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds as Arrowhead rolled past Verona 63-34 in a WIAA Division 1 state quarterfinal at the Kohl Center.

Guards Andy Fox and Charlie Fischer added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Warhawks (23-3), who advance to play Milwaukee Marquette (19-8) in a state semifinal tonight.

-- Milwaukee Marquette 48, Milwaukee Hamilton 43—Milwaukee Marquette might have been making its debut in the WIAA boys basketball state tournament Thursday night, but the team’s veteran roster of players—who’ve competed in state finals before in football, soccer and baseball—came through in the clutch.

Senior forward Marvin Paine scored eight of his game-high 15 points during a 20-6 run in the second half, and the Hilltoppers rallied past fourth-ranked Hamilton.

“Being up here for the football team really taught us how to win,” said Paine, a wide receiver on the football team that won the private school’s first WIAA state title last fall. “That really gave us leadership. We weren’t really worried about the bright lights. … We were used to it already. I think that really prepared us for (this).”

-- Appleton East 54, Antigo 46—Caleb Zeegers scored 18 points and Sam Mader had 14 points and 12 rebounds as Appleton East defeated Antigo.

The Patriots (22-5) advance to today’s semifinals against Madison Memorial.

Appleton East took advantage of Antigo’s cold shooting start to build a 13-4 lead.

after one quarter. The Red Robins (24-1) were just 1-of-16 from the field in the first period.

Antigo senior Jordan Mach led the Red Robins with 24 points. But the UW-Parkside recruit was just 6-of-22 from the floor, and struggled down the stretch.

The Patriots never trailed after falling behind 3-0 to start, and led by as many as 12 points in the third period.

Antigo fought back to within 42-40 on Skylar Cameron’s layup with 2:19 left in the fourth quarter, but Appleton East was 12-of-16 from the free-throw line to finish the game and pull away.
