— A Janesville woman on Friday reported she was tackled by a man on the Kiwanis Bike Trail near Main Street and Palmer Drive in the city of Janesville.

Police are seeking the public’s help in finding the suspect.

He is described as a white man between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall. He weighs approximately 175 pounds, is between 30 to 40 years old and has a dark mustache, according to a news release from the Janesville Police Department.

The man was last seen running west from the scene. He was wearing a tan baseball cap, a tan shirt and tan Docker-style pants.

The 18-year-old woman told police she was tackled from behind and struck in the face by the man at 1 p.m. She had minor abrasions and did not need medical attention.

The suspect did not take anything from the woman, Lt. Keith Lawver said.

A search by a police dog did not locate the subject.

In case the incident was sexually motivated, detectives conducted home visits of local, registered sex offenders, but no suspects were developed, the news release states.

Police keep an eye on the city’s trails but had not been conducting foot patrols on Friday, Lawver said. If you have information, call the Janesville Police Department at (608) 755-3100 or CrimeStoppers at (608) 755-3636.

DaleGribble,

http://www.legis.state.wi.us/statutes/St...

Check out section 941.23, it specifically states that going armed with a concealed weapon is a crime, not with an unconcealed weapon. Open Carry is legal in Wisconsin, in fact opencarry.org, a pro 2nd amendment rights group, is going to be in the area of Armstrong-Eddy park this sunday picking up trash, while open carrying, to spread awareness. They have spoken with local law enforcement to let them know what was going on. I think, if open carry was illegal, either BPD or TBPD would of informed them of this.
People that are going to be in isolatred areas should not wear headphones so they can maintain their situational awareness. It is alot easier for a nefarious character with evil intentions to sneak up on you if you are jamming to tunes and not paying attention to your surroundings.

Women and Girls should always travel in groups. Don't wear head phones so you can hear someone coming from behind you. If you have pepper spray you should have it in hand and ready to go at all times. You won't have time to grab it out of your fanny pack or pocket. Always be aware of who is around you. I use the bike trail on my bike along afton road a lot during the spring and summer.

Dalegribble and jvlhousewife: This woman reported that she was tackled by a man while on the trail. All I know is that I'm 5'1" and very petite. I doubt a hammer or a shillelagh (shelalie if you're dale) would help me fight off an attacker. I also doubt my dog (which was also a suggestion) would help much either. In my comment I do not see anything about me using pepper spray on a dog so I really appreciate the threat of getting my "arse" kicked. This is not about reacting first "simply because you're scared." This is about being able to DEFEND ourselves should an attack occur. As for feeling safe in our own parks, there are many stretches on the trails where no one would hear you scream. This ain't Mayberry. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go purchase some COMPLETELY LEGAL pepper spray at Gander Mountain. I'll try my best not to use it on a dog.

That is how I feel Dalegribble, I don't agree with everybody being able to carry guns everywhere they want, as I was saying earlier if someone comes up and shoots my dog because he is scared of my dog I can in turn shoot him him because he scared me. That is how stupid this is. I would never carry a gun and hopfully someone that would shoot a dog would not be able to get a gun.

Every woman can learn self-defense and safety training through the JPD S.A.F.E training. It's worth looking into and taking the class!

I'm out on the trails A LOT during the summer. For years I've thought I should carry pepper spray. Where does one buy pepper spray? Will they show me how to properly use it or is that covered in some sort of self defense class somewhere? Ideas anyone?

I agree, I was out of control. I did it on purpose. Now just substitute the word criminal or sex offender for dog, and I sound just like the majority of posters on these boards.

They did not see it happen and I'm sure there was no way to prove it. Thus leaving the way it was worded to probably be the only way. After all the people who have reported things that were found to not be true lately I'm sure they have to choose the words carefully.
Just saying.

Did anyone else notice the way the Gazette reported this as "Woman Reports Assault on Kiwanis Bike Trail" and not "Woman Assaulted on Kiwanis Bike Trail"? Is it just me or is there something about the tone of this article that makes it sound like they think she was making it up?

I take a can of wasp/hornet spray with me on the trail when biking. Works good on dogs that try to bite your legs.

Janesville's traffic lights don't have camera's they have sensors for emergency vehicles to be able to change to lights. There has been talk about putting up cameras in Janesville but it is always decided to be too expensive.

I agree with having cameras place along the trail, might help some.
They have them on the street lights now so why not there also?

So if you think we should all be able to carry guns just in case a dog scare us, then while I am walking on the trail and you come running up behind me it is O.K. for me to turn around and shoot you because I thought you were running up to attack me, you knew you were only out for a nice jog, but I didn't I was just trying to keep myself safe so it was fine for me to shoot you.

Truth 1 and justmy414
You people are out of control. Leave the dogs alone they are not going to hurt you if you remain calm, especially if it is on a leash. I have run on different parts of the trail for years and have never encountered an agressive dog. I will gladly keep my Dog and myself away from you two if you plan to use a knife or a gun on a dog just because you might be afraid or it comes too close to you. Try to shoot my dog or somone's leashed dog and see what happens. Where do you see all these dog attacks happening?? besides in your head. Freaks like you are the reason why Wisconsin doesn't have a conceal and carry law. You are too paranoid to be on the trail and apparently in public. Simple soulution don't run on the trail alone!!!

We all need to work on educating ourselves and our children about safety in general. Stay in groups, know your area, and just be careful. Violence can happen anywhere. I hope the police catch this man.

I wish the dog owners would carry a poop sack. This time of year the trail is covered with dog crap, during the winter the trail is snow coverd, and no one is there to monitor them.

Anyone that doesn't want to go the gun route could carry a big knife instead...That would be WAY better than nothing in a dog attack.

If you want to carry a gun you can if you're not a felon, but it has to be holstered where it can be seen not concealed...I'm seriously considering this due to the loose dog thing that was mentioned.

I bike the trail regularly. Although other segments from the golf course east and north get lots of traffic, this section does not, and the vegetation creates a tunnel effect. While it's no closer to the trail than on the Rock River Parkway, it may be worth considering cutting back for more visibility and safety.
.
Technically, the Kiwanis Trail is *part* of the Ice Age Trail Corridor through the city. The part east of the Jackson St. hub is the Spring Brook Trail. Other city trail segments have different names. When giving emergency directions it would be best to try to use landmarks and cross streets, because the trail is miles long.

I am scared of all dogs, even those on leashes. I think I should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon and just shoot any dog that run up close to me and scares me. Afterall I have a right to protect myself.

I agree, Darren. Maybe carry pepper spray or a pocket knife, I know I would. I am even scared to walk down the street alone because of loose dogs. They scare me! I was attacked by a dog when I was a kid, I was about 9 and the dog straddled me against the wall and was a lot taller than me, my dad chased it away with a pitchfork and later shot it with a pellet gun!!

Accuracy in reporting is critical. This is the Ice Age Trail. The Kiwanis Trail runs along the river behind Mercy to Riverside park.
While the trail is not adressed, to call it by the wrong name, could delay emergency response.

It absolutly upsets me to read this. Nobody has the right to assualt anybody. Especially if you are just minding your own business going on a little stroll through the park. I remember a couple of years ago a Woman was assualted on the iceage trail. I think it would be absolutly appropriate to have Secuarty out on these trails. It truely makes me appauled that an age limit would be appropriate crossed my mind about having people on these trails.

I wouldn't have a problem with concealed carry if they also required a person to attend a gun safety program to qualify for the permit. Not only for how to use the weapon but also under what circumstances it's use is acceptable. The idea of giving anyone who wants one a permit without any training and to use under any circumstance they chose is frightening and I think asking for trouble.

futurerichguy - That was a little harsh. When you can come up with one good reason why WI and IL are the only two states that don't allow it, then someone may listen. Fact is, you should be allowed to protect yourself.

This is; by geography the Ice Arena/ National Guard Area/ Dawson Field. Was the assult in that area, on the K Trail? That is always an iffy spot for users of the trail. There is a public blindspot, I'll call it that, that even with activity surrounding the trail, one could easily not be seen or heard. I have passed many a shadey characters around there. ( Sorry, I mean, not the most influentual type persons of Janesville/ I don't want to discriminate purely upon looks.)
As fine weather presents itself, and more patrons begin utilizing the Bike Trail, would it behoove us all, because of society today, to reformilarise ourselves and our children on personal safety? Parents should begin discussing these occurances with children. Not to scare them, but to promote traveling in numbers, avoiding short cuts, and staying alert to possible dangers. For the most part, regular users of the trail would have interveined had they noticed any misconduct.
I hope she is alrite. And I hope that they catch the individual.
Its kind of diffcult to visualize someone just bopping-someone for no reason, unless they were from a tavern/ that I have seen. It happens.
