BELOIT A new multi-jurisdictional coalition will focus on tobacco control efforts in Rock County and four other counties.
The Southwest Alliance for Tobacco Control will be led by the Family Service Association/Rock County Youth2Youth, said Debbie Fischer, director.
It is one of 13 such coalitions in Wisconsin and encompasses tobacco prevention efforts in Rock, Green, Grant, Lafayette and Iowa counties, she said.
The alliance was formed after the Tobacco Control Program lost 55 percent of its 2010 state funding, Fischer said.
Big tobacco companies spend millions of dollars each year in Wisconsin promoting their products to youth and young adults, she said. New tobacco products—such as candy-flavored tobacco products and spitless and absorbable products—are being introduced to target youth, she said.
“The tobacco companies are not going away, and tobacco control efforts can’t either. It’s imperative that tobacco prevention efforts continue to educate and deter youth from beginning a tobacco addiction,’’ Fischer said.
That’s where the new alliance comes in, she said.
Task forces will operate in each county and will focus on:
-- Implementation of statewide smoke-free air policy.
-- Youth prevention, educating the community about new tobacco products, policy work and cessation programs.
-- Coordination of tobacco prevention and control efforts.
Wisconsin becomes a smoke-free state July 5, Fischer said.
“But our work is not done,” she said. “The tobacco industry is always five steps ahead of us, and we must stay on the pathway to help our kids never start and help the people who are addicted to quit. We feel the newly formed multi-jurisdictional coalition will help us do just that.”

jterry, what is it about your deficient intellect that allows you only to respond with insults instead of point-for-point comments?
Maybe your intellect is clogged up from the fact that many a times a day you take a round elongated thing and stick it your mouth and draw its emissions then you ingest those emissions. Yes, smoking has really messed up your ability to think STRAIGHT.

jtjerry...., there's a lot of that going around. But in her case, the people who agree with her, far outnumber the people who don't. You could be said to be on the same "ego trip", the difference is: you're not rallying people to your cause like she is rallying people to her cause, which is the cause of millions of people.

If Miss Fischer was so sure of herself on this hallowed mission of hers why was she and others so afraid of making this a statewide referendum, it has gone way beyond a smoking ban, it is now her personal crusade to save all of the unwashed masses from themselves, she is the Messiah, god save us all

the thing that bothers me about this Debbie Fischer and people like her< Greg Peck are you reading this? is that all they see are their one and only side of their story, I take the trasin from Harvard, Ill to Chicago to visit my brother, there used to be a little beer and shot bar by the station, nothing fancy but it was nice and clean, the owner viet nam vet, 2 tours, got his GI bill saved up and did the American dream thing, bought his bar, Ill went smoke free, he lost customers, and had to sell his place, I thought and He thought we lived in a democracy, well it trns out we do not, do we Miss Fischer am I right mr. Peck? You 2 did not have to go into his place, but you felt it is your right to shut it down, please explain yourselves on this

Okay, whythink, start naming......I am waiting. I have never blown my "toxic fumes" in anyones face either. Go outside, with all the air quality reports right now you can get cancer just from walking to your car! You are just as full of it as the rest of the negativity on here. I never once promoted kids smoking and I also said I was curteous. And yeah, OJ got acquitted, but where is he now? We, smokers, are trying to say that it is biased what is going on. Sure it is a habit, but so is picking your nose and I see a lot of people doing that while driving. PULL THEM OVER, THEY ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE ROAD, JUST TO THE FINGER HEADING TO THEIR MOUTH WITH THEIR SNOT!!!

Lumberjack754 - I'll smoke to that !!!
My cigs don't end me up in detox. My cigs don't end me up in jail. My cigs don't make me weave all over the roadways until I kill someone. My cigs don't make me steal or rob to support my habit. My cigs don't spread AIDS or other diseases. My cigs have never caused an overdose. My cigs are legal and my choice.
My cigs do stink, are dangerous to my health, and are outlawed in certain places. But so does my buddy's gas, but I've learned to start moving when he leans to one side.

.
All of you criticizing this lady...WHY? It sounds like she is trying to prevent young people (CHILDREN) from starting. If you think that is wrong you are SICK (IMO).
Her other goal is, "...help the people who are addicted to quit." Since the first step to beating an addiction is admitting a problem one MUST assume that she is talking about people with the desire but in need of support.
.
Where is the article does she talk about entering your home and taking your cigs away?
.
justme, That example is funny. Hell, OJ was aquitted, does that mean all of us can get away with murder. NOPE! You, and your family are lucky, I can name a dozen people not as fortunate. Just cause it worked for you doesn't mean it isn't a bad idea for others.
.
I see it as a personal choice...but shouldn't be done around others. In private...GO FOR IT!
.
BTW, I did not equate smoking to murder so do not go there!

In reference to ihavealfe(butnotafullyfuntioningbrain)When is the last time you saw somebody get smashed on a pack of menthols and took out a busload of kids?.Your logic ranks right up there with janesvillian.
i for one think there is no more stinky smelly habit than to stick your high riding nose in somebody elses business i am tired of takin crap from you self absorbed hipocrites. quit whineing and stop world hunger, go to haiti and build some houses, or to milwaukee and figure out how to curb the murder/crime epidemic!!! and until you achieve that get the hell off my back! If you still feel the need to straighten this out. leave your number on here and i will call you with my address, that way we can share some "quality time" together and you won't have to hide behind your keyboard. And as far as that lady lookin like a smoker, I bet she is far worse than that. A former smoker that feels she did not get enough conrats from her family, so she is looking for the moral majority to build her a monument!!! Give me a break

I totally agree with lumberjack! I also am a smoker and I have no desire to quit. I think all this uproar over smoking is a crock of sh__! I am very courteous when around others (if they don't smoke) and I smoke in my own home and car. My dad smoked 3 packs of non filter Pall Malls for 70 years of his life and around us 5 girls (his daughters). He didn't die from any form of cancer and my mom nor us girls have any form of cancer or heart problems. I have smoked for 35 years and plan to take a pack with me to the funeral home, so put that in your whatever kind of pipe you have, and SMOKE IT!!!

The only question I have is why should any employee work in a place that allows smoking? No other industry could get away with having its workforce breath in the deadly fumes that are produced by 2nd hand smoke.
In any other industry, those would be considered toxic and you would see an "WARNING Toxic Fumes Room Ahead, Authorized Personnel ONLY, GAS MASK REQUIRED"
Why are bars and restaraunts immune to that standard?

it is a persons choice if they want to smoke and most of the anti smokers are former smorkers. There is way more issues that need to be dealt with then smoking. HEROIN/CRACK/NARCOTIC ABUSE/Drunk Drivers/ Rapists/child abusers and the list goes on.If a person chooses to smoke and go places that allow it then the ANTI people can go elsewhere if it bothers them. I will be damned if I owned a business and someone was going to ban smoking (A legal thing to purchase) I would make it a private members only place. If they don't want to be around smoke THEN DON'T go around those that choose to smoke' BRB gotta go outside and smoke
