Warhawks win first WIAC gym title
ST. PETER, Minn. UW-Whitewater won its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s gymnastics championship Sunday here at Gustavus Adolphus College.
The Warhawks posted 185.475 team points to upset 13-time defending champion UW-La Crosse, which earned 183.775 points. Winona State University (Minn.) placed third with 183.600 points, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 180.325 points, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 179.675 points, UW-Stout sixth with 178.725 points, Gustavus Adolphus seventh with 175.275 points and Hamline University (Minn.) eighth with 175.100.
The championship also served as the West Regional qualifier for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championships that will be held March 26-27 at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. Whitewater, La Crosse and Winona State each earned team spots for the national meet.
Whitewater’s Justine Weyer won the uneven bars for the third consecutive season with a score of 9.650. She joined UW-Oshkosh’s Mary Leivian (1986-88) as the only competitors in conference history to claim three straight titles in the event.
Warhawks’ coach Jennifer Regan was named WIAC gymnastics co-coach of the year with Becky Rolbiecki of Winona State.
Also competing for Whitewater were Allison Nelson, Mary Kate Young, Annie Mix, Katie Thompson, Leah Applin, Katrin Finch and Siri Wischmann.
