Gophers dominate Badgers
MINNEAPOLIS Seniors Tony Lucia and Mike Carman scored two goals apiece as Minnesota routed Wisconsin, 6-1, Sunday in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association finale.
The Golden Gophers open the WCHA playoffs on Friday at North Dakota while second-seed Wisconsin plays host to Alaska-Anchorage.
Both of Lucia’s goals were on the power play for the Golden Gophers (17-17-2, 12-14-2 WCHA). One of Carman’s goals also helped Minnesota go 5-for-8 with a man advantage.
“On a little bigger (ice) we were able to work to power play,” Minnesota coach Don Lucia said. “It’s all about scoring goals. When we score goals, we win games. When we get one or two, we don’t.”
Minnesota is 15-1-0 when holding opponents to two goals or less, but 2-16-2 when allowing three or more. The Golden Gophers lost 3-2 to Wisconsin on Friday.
Carman had two assists and Lucia another. Jacob Cepis added a goal and an assist, and Mike Hoeffel and Cade Fairchild had two assists each.
Nick Leddy had a power-play goal.
“Our power play hasn’t been very good lately, so it was big to score some goal,” Lucia said.
Michael Davies scored the only goal for Wisconsin (22-9-4, 17-8-3). The Badgers had won four straight games.
Minnesota’s Alex Kangas made 26 saves, and Wisconsin’s Brett Bennett stopped 22.
