Elkhorn freshman leads Elks’ hopes
Randi Fuller is not performing like a freshman.
The Elkhorn High freshman led the Elks to a second-place finish with 127.575 points at last Saturday’s Division 2 sectional to host Whitefish Bay (143.15).
The second-place finish put the Elks into Saturday’s Division 2 WIAA state team meet.
Fuller will lead the school’s third overall trip to state after finishing third in the all-around (35.225) at the sectional meet.
Fuller was second on uneven bars (8.85), fourth on vault (8.6), fifth in floor exercise (8.875) and fifth on balance beam (8.9).
“I’ve been watching her since she was in seventh grade, so I had an idea she had the talent,” said Elkhorn Missy Helgeson.
Since Fuller has competed in club tournaments, her first trip to state should not be as nerve-wracking for the freshman.
“She is very young, but I don’t think she will have any more stress,” Helgeson said. “I just told all the girls we are going to have to relax and enjoy their time at state.’’
The rest of the team includes juniors Emma Papenfus and Vada Wirtz, sophomore Chelsea Briere and freshman Samantha Schmidt.
Meanwhile, Cassie Cropp of Milton and Kim Stonewerth of Whitewater advanced out of the Mount Horeb Sectional to compete in Friday’s individual meet.
Cropp, a junior, advanced in the all-around and on the vault. She placed fifth in the all-around (38.8) and tied for fourth in the vault (8.75). It will be Cropp’s third trip to state.
Stonewerth advances as the sectional vault (9.4) champion to also make her third state appearance. She placed fourth on the vault and 10th in all-around last year.
