The Better Business Bureau advises people who recently purchased a tanning package from Bronze Body & Brew using a credit card to dispute the charges in writing with their credit card company.

— The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau is issuing an alert about a Whitewater tanning salon after receiving more than 150 complaints against the company since Monday, according to a news release.

The people who complained, many of them UW-Whitewater students, reported paying about $50 on tanning packages from Bronze Body & Brew, 1139 W. Main St. They were left in the cold after the salon abruptly closed last week, according to the release.

Madison Tanning Company, a new tanning salon in the same location, is not affiliated with Bronze Body & Brew and is not redeeming any of their packages, according to the release.

Bronze Body & Brew listed three locations on its “$1 tans” coupon: 1139 W. Main St., Whitewater; W191 S7741 Racine Ave., Muskego; and 705 S. Janesville St., Milton. An employee at the Muskego salon said the Milton salon closed last year, according to the release. The employee also said customers may redeem tanning packages at the Muskego store.

Most of the students complained that they were given no warning about the salon closing or that their tanning packages would be worthless at the new company. Many of the people who complained said they were encouraged to stock up on tanning sessions because they had no expiration date.

“(T)hey encouraged us to buy as many as we could because they never expire and will carry on throughout the years,” a student identified as Rachel said, according to the release. “They gave no indicators of a struggling business.”

Many students are angry they lost their money.

“It’s ridiculous that this business decided to up and leave without mentioning it to the customers,” a student identified as Emily said, according to the release. “Most of the people who tan at this place are college kids who don’t have a lot of money to begin with, and I’m no different … I’m furious, and I want my money back.”

"Look at the bright side they probably saved someone from getting skin Cancer" but unfortunately they are now exposing themselves to a higher potential level of recieving other forms of cancer as a result of NOT tanning, caused by a Vitamin D deficiency. Studies have proven tanning LOWERS your chances of recieving colon and breast cancer and several other forms of cancer. ANYTHING in excess will cause problems and this of course includes tanning. As adults we need to make responsible decisions with our lives. One glass of wine every other night is harmless, actually studies have shown it to be benficial to your health. 5 glasses of wine every night will cause countless damage to your health.

Don't judge people.....unless you are judging the owner of this saloon. He is obviously a scumbag.

its not a scam! Its called business. You try to generate business by creating an ad, if you cannot make it you close your doors & file bankruptcy protection.

Any of the people with losses can get a lawyer and get in line to get paid. I am sure there are many vendors looking for money as well.

That is good advice on the side bar. If you paid with a credit card call them and dispute it. You may be pleased. It is worth a try. I don't think debit cards work for a dispute in this case.

Read the tiny, tiny, tiny print of that contract. I bet you will find something there about no refunds.

The point is, people paid money for a service and didn't get it. They should be refunded. I bought tans in Milton, then was told to go to Whitewater. I tried to use them up, but obviously didn't do it in time. No matter what your views on tanning, or the budgets of college students, the point is a "contract" was violated.

I get a kick out of people that assume that anyone who tans lives at the tanning salon. I did lose 45 or so tans at this joint, but I only go once a week and I like doing it. It's my money. The point isn't what the business does or provides, it's that they are thieves. Any business could have them.

Well I guess there are alot of people in this area who spend money on what exactly they should...never buy anything they shouldn't...or buy something they may feel is pleasureable. Hmmm that is amazing! However these so called owners of a Tanning Salon should go un-noticed and just purposely take peoples money and we blame people for not spending money correctly. INCREDIBLE!!

College is expensive, but it doesn't mean college students are "broke" and can't afford tanning. I was lucky and had many grants and scholarships which covered nearly my entire tuition, and small student loans covered the rest along with living costs. College today isn't what it was 30 years ago, most student today work jobs so they do have spending money - which they can do what they want with including tanning. Most of those who are tanning right now are preparing for a spring break trip, which they likely paid hundreds of dollars for, from their hard earned money.

Luckily I took Frogger's advice and used my 50 tans up in the first week. I now have a rich ebony hue and glow in the dark.

No one has the right ot judge anyone on how them spend their own money. We do not know how they earn it and its none of our business. The whole point of this story is the business closed without refunding the money or giving the product and didnt warn anyone. The only lesson to be learned is dont trust anyone because anything can happen. Doesnt matter if its a gift card, or a gym membership or a tan purchase, this could happen to any business and no one is safe!

I agree these business patrons were ripped off. However, it's hard to sympathize with the whole "college is so expensive" line that is out there these days when college students have money to spend on tans. I never could have afforded something like that when I was in college 30 years ago.

I bought a gift card for a restaurant once for a gift. The restaurant closed before the recipient used it. The new place wouldn't accept it which I understand. Lesson here used gift cards ASAP not 1 year later when they have already closed.

The lesson learned here is don't buy gift cards if you think the place isn't going to be around long. If you do buy them use ASAP!

You will not get your money back. If they closed the money is already spent I assume.

Donkeykong- I find it very interesting when people are on Badger Care, rental assistance, and receive free food how they can find money for a fake tan and nails!!

Although I think it's unfortunate people lost their money, I can't say this is a pressing issue. I have friends that are losing their homes. A tan in the middle of winter in WI looks ridiculous anyway.

How is it up to anyone to judge how/where others choose to spend their money? The bottom line here is that the owners of this business ripped off a lot of people.

It doesn't matter if it's tanning, a gym or piano lessons. People prepaid for a product and now that product is gone.

You can find the owners names if you go to bbb.org and do a search for the business name. Sorry to say, but it doesn't seem like anyone will be getting their money back.

Hey Newsflash to all you people who obviously have fried brain cells inside those cancer tubes.

If the owners don't have enough money to stay open, they don't have enough money to pay you back.

Life lesson learned. There are many times people have bought gift cards to have the store close and the gift cards are worthless. Same story here.

If you don't have a lot of money to begin with, why are you wasting it on tanning?? Yes, everyone likes to look good, but wouldn't food or housing be a little more important than tanning?? Priorities people!! College kids are adults & as a former college kid you don't always make the best decisions, but come on!! Tanning when you don't have the money?? Imagine what would happen when you get skin cancer from tanning... That's a bit more expensive than tanning, don't you think??

When they closed Milton they said people could redeem by going to Whitewater now they closed the Whitewater location and people can redeem in Muskego. I wonder where the people in Muskego are going to be sent. There has to be some recourse to get the money back. Just make them close the last store in Muskego sell off all the stuff and return peoples money. Has to be better than going to jail for fraud or theft.

You have that correct ranjan.
>
It wouldn't even occur to me to spend money on something as frivolous or intangible as tanning while paying tuition and student loans. The money must not be that tight.
>
So all the patrons of this defunct business are now out 10's or 100's of dollars worth of service?
>
I would be bent too, if I lost 10-100 bucks, but not real upset.
>
It could be worse, like losing 10's of thousands of dollars of equity when the housing market folded, or two thirds of your 401K worth, or paying car payments on a totaled car wrecked by a drunk driver.
>
The good news is with these locations closed, no one else will get burned...

short on cash but will stock up on tanning coupons. Somebody needs to go back to high school or even middle school. I have a beach front cottage for rent during spring break. $100.00 a night cash up front.

I had pre-payed minutes at the Milton location this Fall. Went there one day and they were closed. The employees told me the night before that their pay checks had bounced. I should have realized something was wrong when several tanning beds were all of a sudden off limits. I think they may have been removed at that point and the doors were locked so we couldn't tell. The phone message said I could use my minutes at the Whitewater location. Yeah, I'm going to drive all the way there to tan.

I was angry and felt cheated since this person STILL has my hard earned money. I am an adult so I can only imagine how these students feel! I would like to know who the owner(s) is/are and see if there is recourse on getting our money back.

Coupons that never expire? That had to hurt their cash management. It's possible they bet that students would stock up on coupons and then leave town, never redeeming them.
