JANESVILLE The city should have a new fire chief by November.
Fire Chief Larry Grorud, the longest-serving fire chief in Janesville history, announced earlier that he is retiring. His last day on the job will be Nov. 30, said Leslie Brunsell, Janesville Police and Fire Commission chairperson.
The commission will start advertising the fire chief position after its April 14 meeting. Applications will be due June 30.
Brunsell described the search as more regional than national.
“We’re not contracting with a search company like what was done (in 2004) when Neil Mahan was hired for police chief,” she said. “We felt that wasn’t really necessary.’’
The new chief will be paid between $95,000 and $113,964 and will oversee a department with a 2010 budget of $9.8 million and 94 employees.
Human Resources Director Susan Musick will review resumes and make recommendations to the commission. Interviews are planned for September.
The commission continues to discuss whether the new chief should be required to live in the city, Brunsell said.
