— A 9-year-old Orfordville boy accused of stealing his mom’s car and striking a mailbox was referred to juvenile authorities on a charge of operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent.

“It sounded like a joyriding incident,” Rock County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Thompson said. “That’s not one that we get very often. I would say that’s a little unusual.”

The boy took the four-door sedan from his mother at 7:34 p.m. Wednesday at their home in the 300 block of Mowe Street, Thompson said.

The boy struck a mailbox while leaving the driveway, he said.

He drove around the block and parked in a neighbor’s yard in the 200 block of Cherry Street, Thompson said. The boy’s mother drove the car home.

No one was injured, Thompson said, and the vehicle had minor damage.

The boy was released to his mom.
