Victor Herbst believed all along that Janesville Craig senior Christian DeCremer was one of the best outfielders in the Big Eight.

Turns out the Craig High coach wasn’t alone. DeCremer not only got the opposing coaches’ votes to make the all-conference first team this week, but he now is a third-team pick in the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association all-state selections.

DeCremer earned his honors by batting .451, highlighted by 11 extra-base hits, and consistently making big plays in center field.

“He was threat every time he stepped to the plate, and defensively, his arm is as good as I’ve seen at this level,” Herbst said earlier this week. “And he could track down anything hit to him.’’

There wasn’t much wasn’t senior shortstop Michael Handel couldn’t do, either, for Sun Prairie’s Big Eight co-champions. The conference Player of the Year, a University of Minnesota recruit, even pitched a six-inning perfect game against Madison Memorial and now is a first-team all-state selection as an infielder.

The first team also includes Middleton junior outfielder Luke Meeteer and Burlington senior outfielder Dylan Friend, who led his team to 25 wins and the Southern Lakes Conference championship.

Middleton pitcher Shane Adler is on the second team after making the first team a year ago. This year’s second team also includes Burlington infielder Mike Porcara.

Edgerton senior second baseman Adam Gregory, a unanimous all-district selection, has received all-state honorable mention. That caps a high school career in which the UW-Whitewater prospect hit .421, including .450 this season.

La Crosse Central infielder Bobby Juan, also a University of Minnesota recruit, is the state Player of the Year.

Mitch Phillips, Craig’s All-Big Eight designated hitter, has been named all-state academic team. He is joined by Meeteer, Jefferson’s Michael Stellmacher,Wilmot’s Quincy Berg and Westosha Central’s John Wilson.
