— Police say a 16-year-old Janesville boy walking with two teen girls was beaten by five masked robbers at about 2 a.m. Monday at Madison and Ravine streets.

“They demanded money from him and a camouflage folding knife was put to his neck,” Sgt. Aaron Ellis said.

When the boy told his attackers he didn’t have any money “they beat him up pretty good,’’ Ellis said. He was knocked to the ground and kicked in the face. His teeth were broken, and he had severe swelling to his lips and nose, Ellis said.

The boy told police he was assaulted by up to five young men identified as members of a street gang.

The attackers took the boy’s cigarette lighter and cell phone, which they left behind after smashing it, Ellis said.

Police called an ambulance, but the boy refused to go to the hospital and left with his mother, who arrived on scene shortly after the incident, Ellis said.

“They concealed their identities with bandanas over their faces,” Ellis said.

One of the girls with the victim—a 15-year-old Janesville girl—was referred to juvenile authorities on suspicion of curfew violation, but she has been uncooperative with police, Ellis said.

The other girl, a 17-year-old from Janesville, fled before police arrived and remains missing, he said.
